DATE GLAZED BACON

DATE GLAZED BACON

Date glazed bacon is a delectable treat combining the savory richness of bacon with the natural sweetness of dates. I first had this bacon at Mon Ami Gabi in Vegas. They used chopped dates that got candied and you had this sweet salty bite with some pieces of date. I wanted it to be more like maple glazed bacon but with the flavour of dates so I baked the bacon until they were nearly crisp, then brushed with date syrup. The bacon is then returned to the oven until the glaze caramelizes, creating a glossy, sticky coating. The result is a harmonious blend of sweet and salty. This dish makes a delightful appetizer or an indulgent breakfast treat.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bacon
  • 2 tbsp date syrup

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400℉.
  • Place a baking rack on a sheet pan and place the bacon on the baking rack.
  • Bake for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and brush with the date syrup. Turn over and brush the other side. Place back in the oven for 5-10 minutes. Check after 5 minutes, if it needs more time, let bake for an additional 5 mins.
  • Remove from oven and transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to absorb the oil.
  • Plate and serve.

Notes

When it’s in the last 5 minutes, keep an eye on it. Depending on your oven it could be in 5 minutes or need a few more minutes. It can go from perfect to burnt very quickly in those last few minutes.
Put the bacon on the paper towel to absorb some of the oil, but don’t keep it on the paper towel as it will stick to it as it cools.
